Castello and Santa Croce

Mysterious Castello, with its Arsenale haunted by phantom fleets of Venetian trading vessels and warships, its still, silent calli and the plaintive cries of the seagulls heading for the open sea, is the milieu for a contemplative view of Venice. But seriously, Castello offers peace and quiet just five to ten minutes from Piazza San Marco, depending upon the apartment you choose. There is a fascinating Naval History museum, Vivaldi's church, and the lovely public gardens where the Venice Biennale is held. Add excellent dining (everything from Chinese to Venetian) to the mix, and you've got the recipe for a truly satisfying vacation.

Santa Croce, is the area which includes the public garage, ferryboat to Lido, the Maritime Port, and some of Venice's most ancient buildings. This is a good place to stay if you're planning regular day trips outside of the city during your stay. The San Marco public garage is a short walk from anywhere in the district, as is the train station. The area is mostly residential, and many students from the University live here during the school year.
